Five ways you can help to prevent cavities

Most people have at least one cavity and simply accept tooth decay as being part of life. But did you know there are a few simple things you can do to reduce your risk?

1. Stop smoking because smoking makes it easier for decay - causing plaque to stick to your teeth. It is terrible for your gums too!

2. Drink more water as it is the best way to stay hydrated. If you currently consume lots of high - sugar or very acidic drinks, switching to water could make all the difference. At the very least rinse your mouth with water after having something sugary or acidic.

3. Use an anti - bacterial mouthwash because this will help to reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth after brushing and flossing.

4. Brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day and for two minutes each time. Make sure you use the correct toothbrush and the right brushing techniques. Ask us for more help and advice if you aren’t sure.

5. Have your teeth cleaned professionally. Most people need six - monthly cleans to remove plaque and tartar buildup, reducing the risk of toot h decay and leaving your mouth feeling beautifully fresh. Regular cleanings are also great for your gums.
